What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental health lies on a continuum and we all have fluctuating Mental Health throughout our lives. The World Health Organisation and Mind state that 1 in 6 of the working population experience mental ill health and 25% of people are reported to be living with unresolved mental health issues. The Mental Health Foundation highlights that Mental Health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination. Developing a culture of communication and openness around Mental Health issues has been shown to benefit employees.
To support resilience, it is recommended that organisations promote positive Mental Health workplace initiatives and strategies. Having a similar amount of Mental Health First Aiders to Medical First Aiders is a keyway of addressing this. There is a growing momentum for change and hundreds of businesses across a range of sectors are investing in developing Mental Health First Aiders.
